Dune [May. 8th, 2009|06:56 am]
[Current Music |ABBA]

Well this is interesting. Of course, I appear to have forgotten that LiveJournal was something on the internet but there's no point dwelling on that. It seems that that ever since Facebook overtook MySpace, and Twitter became the new buzz word for local airwaves; slightly-longer forms of journaling or blogging have copped it slightly. Not a very astute observation of course, because everybody knows this already.

What is interesting though is that of the random thoughts that people used to gather & write; some of it is actually quite interesting, and a quick step in a time capsule even if the quality is embarrassing. I had a brief look the other day and found it actually a little more insightful than I realised in a vain kind of way.

Speaking of time, let me take you off track for just a minute because this is rather hilarious; really: http://blag.xkcd.com/2009/05/07/duke-nukem-forever/

And...... We're back!

Where was I? Oh yeah, hello readers, stalkers, or even myself (should I find myself stalking my past-self later on in the future..). I'm io; and I'm not sure what this Internet thing is all about. Oh did I also tell you that I'm learning to read?

Finished Don Quixote by Cervantes (trans. Rutherford, Penguin Classics) last month or something and just finished Duen by Frank Herbert yesterday. A Brief History of Time (Stephen Hawking) will also be done probably this time next week if not earlier. Lined up is probably Heinlein's Starship Troopers or thereabouts.

Ok, so *learning to read* might bit of an exaggeration, but it's more like /getting into a reading habit/ (and there's years of it to catch up on). Over summer towards the end of last year, I came to a 'sudden' realisation that there existed people (even friends!) that actually loved to read for *leisure*. So yeah that was kind of weird - I never really gave it much thought but then why wouldn't anyone read for leisure? Enough of this me, myself & I stuff; will have to draw up the relationships between books and TV shows like Heroes later.

This entry ends here, and there will be minimal proof-reading for this post at this stage. That stuff can wait cause it's not like people stalk me anyway when there's web two point oh crap. :p

Walkskies [Nov. 11th, 2008|10:53 pm]
[Current Music |The Two Towers / Return of the King (Howard Shore) / Wicked]

Well, not sure what this lj is for, but I guess I may as well write stuff when I feel like not forgetting my day - which happens to be right now. Anyway, decided to go for a walk after sunset earlier this evening - it would have been more ideal if the sun was still up since the whole sun-thing is apparently conducive to sleeping at night as opposed to maintaining a vampire-like state.

Walked an overall distance of 5.5km today (as mapped by http://www.gmap-pedometer.com - handy tool that); in between, dropped off a non-working-and-now-dismantled external HDD, had a gaze at the Hubble Space Telescope and ate cheap Tuesday pizza, with expensive soft drink. Watched a couple of episodes of Scrubs (s04e03/04) as well as handed on my 256MB stick of RAM in which I no longer had a home for (after earlier myself inheriting 2 x 512MB PC3200 DDR).

Over the past few days, was also intently tuned into the cricket on the radio - Australia vs India, 4th test. TV broadcasts were restricted to Pay TV only, but cricket on the radio is riveting nonetheless.

Home now!

City Hall's existence [Sep. 16th, 2008|07:01 pm]
[Tags|, , , , , , ]
[Current Location |Brisbane / City Hall]

Brisbane City Hall: Wow. Went to a free 12:30 concert, and afterwards found out that we could visit the clocktower. Watched it ring 2, 2:15 and 2:30pm. :) Later, we went to browse Allan's Music before some fast food for brekky. :D

Concert details:

Ravel to Rimsky-Korsakov
"Oliver She (piano), Nicholas Kaye-Smith (violin) and Robert Manly (cello) three of Brisbane's finest young musicians, all of whom have reached high levels of virtuosity on their instruments, will present the stunning Piano Trio by Ravel.

This trio of musical prodigies, will present this beautiful, yet very technical masterpiece first performed in Paris in 1915. Listen for the extreme ranges in each instrument as they create a texture of sound that is unusually rich for chamber music.

Award-winning double, Yu Yan Wang and Paul Lin, bring an exciting program of percussion music that is sure to spice up your day. Listen to percussion at its best with music by Australian composer Robert Lloyd and his lively jungle rhythms of Boobam music; the cool jazzy melodies of Kaleidoscope by Frenchman Eric Sammut; together with favourites from Chopin [Fantaisie Impromptu], Piazzolla and all-time favourite, Flight of the Bumble Bee by Rimsky-Korsakov."

[Current Music |Howard Shore - Lord of the Rings trilogy]

PAIN (UQ Physics Students' Society) had an Error Bar on Astronomy today, after which we went upstairs to the roof of the Parnell Building to skygaze and use the telescope. I got to see Jupiter through a telescope for the very first time, including its 4 moons and banded atmosphere.

Wow 2am!

Ok not that wow in the grand scheme. :p

But yeah, somebody poked fun at me for listening to Aqua earlier this evening, so here I am several piano concertos later and what have you - it's pushing on toward 3am, yet I still haven't launched Counter-Strike yet for any games! D:

Concertos listened to tonight:

Saint-Saens - Piano Concerto No 2 Op 22 in G minor
Tchaikovsky - Piano Concerto No. 1 in Bflat Major, Op. 23 (twice!)
Brahms - Piano Concerto No.1 In D Minor, Op.15
Rachmaninov - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op.43

Cosmic's Birthday [Aug. 17th, 2008|01:46 am]

[Current Music |Garry Schyman - Praan]

Went to the PAIN Eror Bar on the topic of the theremin and also got to play around with a cheap Jaycar one. I could almost play out a major scale but Charelle managed a much better job at it. After that, met up with Cosmic & friends in Toowong for his birthday. We headed out to Chinatown via light-rail (Queensland gauge) train wherein we ate at a random small Chinese restaurant. The vegetarian even got a meal. Fat Louie's pool hall (slash karaoke and jukebox bar) was our final destination in the city and lasted a bit over 2 hours. Nightlink 464 was handy in getting back to Toowong and then home shortly after.

(Tenpin) Bowling will have to be next time, and if I get my line back on the pool table - perhaps some snooker. :)

Oh, and I also got one of those Coca-Cola contour glasses from the maccas Big Mac meal yesterday, and a haircut too - but capitalism is bad, etc etc so I won't go on about how I first heard of the ad on the radio that morning.

Partial lunar eclipse in a few hours time this Sunday morning and a free harp duo concert at 3pm (presented by ABC Classic FM at the ABC Ferry Rd studios) so it'll all be exciting. I'll try and see if I can get a nap now so that my day won't have to be too long.

Oh yeah - Cosmic's birthday (physics error bar, chinatown and fat louie's) was on Friday night.. I think it's Sunday now.

Eye Pee Elle, Eye Pee Elle, IPL! [Apr. 19th, 2008|11:24 am]
[Tags|, , , , ]

Woot the day has started once more - and how good was last night's IPL opener? 13 sixes and 10 fours to compile 158 from 73 balls!

Anyway, that didn't finish until after 03:30 hence the just-waking-up now - sectional rehearsal for choir in 2 hours' time; unlike last week, where I forgot about it until it was already 4pm. ;D We'll be singing Handel's Judas Maccabæus in exactly three weeks' time - grand!

Semester 2 Final Rehearsal (David Fanshawe's 'African Sanctus' and Rober Ray's 'Gospel Mass') [Oct. 27th, 2007|04:01 am]

[Current Location |Creek St to St Lucia]

[Current Music |Enya - Watermark]

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ is cool.

A stroll from Creek St to Hungry Jacks, Milton Maccas, and then home is about 6.8km or so.

Food eaten along the way include a Bacon Deluxe Meal thing, and an apple pie + smoothie thing. The last two items were walked home to at least Auchenflower. Note to self: In future, smoothie is better served with straw, not square maccas spoon.

Hopefully the clouds at night clear soon so that some comet spotting can happen.

http://astroblogger.blogspot.com - top blog.

Oh, yeah; we (QUMS) has a concert tonight - Saturday 27 October. 7:30pm tonight on the corner of Creek and Ann St, Brisbane city. More info at http://uqedu.facebook.com/event.php?eid=4896044118 or http://qums.aicsa.org.au .

[Current Music |Gouryella - Ligaya or something]

Watched them do the real thing, twice; tonight. Almost as impressive as a meteor shower or comet and almost as many people watching as a total lunar eclipse on Mt Coot-tha; but less making out I guess.

Oh yeah, I walked from home here in St Lucia to city - the first time I've done that since walking to the city via the detour-ish Eleanor Schonell Bridge & Goodwill Bridge.

KFC was had and I had Ned & B bump into me before we walked to some Thai restaurant unknown to me in the valley - nearly got hit by cars a few times (if time had beaten us by ~5 seconds on each occasion). Finished an upside-down Lemon Lime & Bitters as well as some fluid dynamics experiments on money before I had to leave after suggesting that I could float a coin on water.

Tended back towards the city being halted along the way by a demolition crew with some slippery monstrous machine and not much space.

They got a little stuck for ideas before we continued to to Copenhagen; lovely hot fudge with passionfruit + cookies/cream.

Walked to maccas, ate maccas while nearly dying a few times (this time to fatigue and perhaps cars) and then got a lift back home from Ned's home, where I almost convinced him to get a kebab but neither were that hungry by then.

Time to do some much-needed dishes here so I can crack open the gelato-yoghurt in my freezer.

Just some figures.. [Jun. 20th, 2007|01:15 pm]

[Current Location |Brisbane]
[Current Mood | hot]
[Current Music |trashy trance]

At lunchtime right now (13:14), Brisbane City's temperature is 12.4°C and Apparent Temperature is 6.8°C.
Sydney Olympic Park is 15.4°C / 11.5°C (AT). Heck, even Sydney Airport is warmer than Brisbane at 14.5°C / 7.2°C (AT). As for Melbourne I hear you say? Well, 12.0°C / 9.4°C AT; so again - Brisbane is pretty much cooler! The only colder capital at this point is Hobart.

I hope people coming to BIV don't underestimate the winter here like how some of my siblings from south underestimated Cairns' "winter" when they brought too many shorts instead of coats.

It was probably a little mistake to open one of my windows up a little to let the room "air". But I've since corrected that with the heaviest jacket which hasn't been worn since around the time I visited Brisbane in 2002 - back when I was acclimatised to Cairns.

Other than that, this is cool. ;D

Duct Tape [Jun. 9th, 2007|05:06 am]
Okay. Dessert restaurants, fairy floss, dark chocolate, fruit juice bars. All of that is fine and acceptable.

A teaspoon of sugar - straight from the packet into mouth (as opposed to a cup of double-shot coffee or tea, both containing that oh so bitter caffeine) - bad for one's teeth.

That probably sums the past weekend & week up the best - definitely easier than getting too wordy with the same risk of audience bewilderment & confusion.

[Alright alright, so it might *look* weird - which I of course accept, but it's still not as weird as biting into lemon slices if you'll admit!]

- 15 hours sleep, 5 minutes at QUMS rehearsal. Then, UQ Big Band had a photoshoot & recording session in the Nickson Room and us 3010 kids had the privilege of being allowed to come along and watch the whole thing being run. I got soopa-important role of relaying verbal cues from the studio to Clint but fortunately my margin for blunder was greatly reduced since pretty much everything was done smoothly.

- QUMS Post Rehearsal Coffee (La Dolce Vita), then Milton Maccas Run encountering college kids yay.
- Now: Just found out I won an Opera T-Shirt via the Facebook Speed Dial Contest. :D
